Bedrock vs Java Server: Which Should You Host?

Minecraft · · 7 min read Minecraft Guides

Java gets the mods and plugins. Bedrock gets the consoles. Pick the edition that matches your friends and you save yourself a weekend of port-forwarding pain.

"Minecraft" is two different games with two different server ecosystems, and picking the wrong one is the single most common reason a friend group spends a weekend unable to play together. Here is the honest comparison, and which one you should host.

The short version

Choose Java if…

  • You want plugins: land claims, a shop, ranks, custom minigames, better moderation tools.
  • You want mods and modpacks — from quality-of-life tweaks to complete overhaul worlds.
  • You want free hosting. Java servers can be self-hosted or hosted by services like SadHost; Bedrock hosting means running BDS yourself.
  • Everyone plays on a PC. Redstone behaviour, combat timing and world generation all behave the way the wiki documents.

Choose Bedrock if…

  • Your group includes console or mobile players — that is Bedrock's killer feature, and it is not really replicable on Java.
  • You mostly play cross-device and care more about who can join than about mods.
  • You are happy with Realms or a local Bedrock Dedicated Server, plus Marketplace content.

Can you have both? Partly

You can let Bedrock clients into a Java server with the Geyser plugin, usually paired with Floodgate so those players do not need a Java account. Install both on your Java server, connect them to one of your spare network ports, and Bedrock players on Windows, Android or iOS can join the same world as your Java players — while keeping all your Java plugins.

Two caveats worth knowing before you promise your console friends anything:

  • Consoles are the exception. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can only join servers through approved methods, so in practice Geyser covers Bedrock on PC and mobile.
  • Behaviour differs. Redstone, combat, entity limits and some blocks do not work identically between the editions. Geyser translates well, but a farm that works for Java players may not work for Bedrock players in the same world.

So which should you host?

If your group is on PCs, host Java. You get the plugins, the modpacks, the free hosting, the documentation and the community tools — and if someone only has a phone or a tablet, Geyser is one install away.

If the majority of your players are on consoles, Bedrock is the pragmatic answer, and you will need to accept its limits: no plugin ecosystem, add-ons instead of mods, and hosting that you either pay for through Realms or run yourself. Many groups solve this by keeping one Java server for the PC crowd and playing Bedrock with the console crowd separately.

A word on performance

Java servers are the ones with real tuning levers: software choice (Paper over Vanilla), view and simulation distance, pre-generation, plugin discipline. That is why a well-tuned free Java server can be smoother than a neglected paid Bedrock one. If you are hosting Java and it stutters, work through the lag checklist — most of it is configuration, not hardware.
